Crazy Horse, Mt Rushmore, Wall Drug

05/27

Woke up in Nebraska but spent the day in South Dakota. On our list of things to do was Crazy Horse, Mt. Rushmore, and Wall Drug.
Crazy Horse was our first stop. The project started in 1948 and the monument has taken shape since then. The memorial is to preserve and protect the culture and life of the North American Indians. They refuse any funds from the government and the whole thing has been built on donations and sales/admission from tourists all around. Did we mention the memorial is huge?? Mt. Rushmore would fit just in the head of Crazy Horse. Crazy.
Now it is off to see the tiny Mt. Rushmore, which isn't tiny at all. You drive along US-20 going up and down and around then, when you least expect it, on one bend the 60 foot heads nearly smack you in the face. Hello Washington, Roosevelt, Jefferson, and Lincoln. Their faces are carved into a granite peak and its amazing how smooth the surface is (one might think its a plastic Halloween mask). It is definitely a monument you would want to see in person.
Our last stop for the day is Wall Drug. The only reason we even heard of the place is that they probably spent millions of dollars on billboard advertising. It all started in 1931 and the place has grown remarkably since then. It's a town within a store. There is a picnic area with photo opportunities, a mining section, water show, T-Rex, Chapel, plenty of shopping, and seriously LOTS more. We gave it  an hour visit but can easily be a whole day visit, especially if you have kids.
After a long and exhausting day we called it a night in Mitchell's Walmart parking lot.
Until tomorrow.
Xoxo

The white statue is what the end product will look like.

Jack-a-lope.
