This is mandatory if you want to keep up to date on everything. Family, friends, life... Now a days everything revolves around Internet and being connected.
There are a few perfect places to get Internet in the US while on a road trip and McDonalds was our favorite. It is easy to find and most McDonald's won't even notice if you did not order any food, or just sit in your car in the parking lot.
Other places would be Dunkin Donuts, Star Bucks, Burger King and sometimes you can park in a hotel/motel and connect on their wifi.
Luckily for everyone it is really easy to get connected. Just don't eat everything when you go into McDonalds or you will return home as an elephant!
